Missa Eaton, Smart As A Whip AND Has Ability! If She Does Not Make It This Time - She'll Be Back!

#5in5: Missa Eaton, an ex-college professor and first-time candidate

This week’s #5in5 trip from Pittsburgh to Cleveland includes stops in districts represented by longtime lawmakers backed by seasoned political consultants and well-funded campaigns.
But we’ll also meet two first-time candidates, who felt compelled to launch long-shot campaigns in hopes of ending the partisan gridlock in Washington.
The first rookie candidate is Missa Eaton, a former assistant professor of psychology at Penn State Shenango, who launched her campaign against Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) because she feels he’s too partisan for Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District.
2chambers spoke with Eaton last week in between calls to voters from her campaign office in Sharpsville, Pa. The interview is edited for length and clarity.
2chambers: You’re a first-time candidate and an academic by training. Why did you want to run for Congress?
Eaton: I’m a believer in good government and I don’t see us getting that. I don’t see our current congressman doing much to represent our district. I thought it was time for someone who was smart, and for someone who thinks about issues in complex ways.
I’ve been a single mom, going back to college, I’ve run my own business, I’ve helped to, I was a coowner of a stock car race track. I worked for other people, where I’ve worried where my next paycheck was coming from. Worried about the solvency of my company
Are you suggesting that Mike Kelly isn’t smart?
I’m suggesting that Mr. Kelly has a set of dogmatic strategies that he’s not willing to stray from. He is very hard-line and has taken very hard-to-the-right, hard-line voters and taken hardline stances that show me that he doesn’t understand where other people are.
We’re heavily union, heavily religious, with all kinds of interests and interests of tourism in the north part and the south part, we have lots of energy concerns everywhere, but what I see is a current representative who’s not even speaking really pro-actively about the businesses and he goes on and on about how he’s a businessman, but he’s not even helping our businesses at a time when they could use help.
He wants to move $2 trillion into the military budget. He supported Paul Ryan’s views on Medicare twice with his vote on that Ryan budget and his district is aging. So how in the world would his district survive if they were suddenly move into a vouchering system for Medicare? I don’t see that he is even thinking about his district and the people who live here.
He came to our community just a couple of months into his term and said he wasn’t going to help us do anything, because the federal government wasn’t going to help solve our problems. Well, the federal government has some role to play. He also said he wasn’t going to take any earmarks. But those types of appropriations are the way that those federal tax dollars get back to our district. That’s wrong. It seems like we’re paying him to do nothing for us, and that doesn’t seem like a good business move to me. I don’t think he’d employ someone who wasn’t going to do anything for him for very long.
Who is your favorite Republican?
Olympia Snowe. She is a moderate, she is pro-women, she is very fair and she is not someone who votes her party line. She’s bipartisan and willing to work with people across the aisle to get things done. It’s sad to me that this very far-to-the-right ideology has driven her from her public service.
How about your favorite Pennsylvania Republican?
Do I have one of those? I honestly cannot tell you that I have a favorite Pennsylvania Republican.
You’re a professor right now?
I was through the end of June. I did not renew my contract with Penn State, because sadly enough it’s difficult to run for office at this level and keep a full-time job. I did that in the Spring, and it nearly did me in.
So how do you support yourself?
It’s a back and forth. My husband started his own business there years ago, and I supported us, and now he’s returning the favor.
Now that you’re a few months into this, how would you advise other wannabe first-time congressional candidates?
You can talk to everybody possible and you’ll never understand what it’s like to run for public office until you do it.
My true advice would be to surround yourself with experts on various parts of a campaign early and figure out if you want to run as early as possible. Talk to someone who’s held that particular position before, and really get an honest accounting of what it means. I did that and I’m so thankful that I did, because I have gone into this with pretty open eyes and not disillusioned that I would get a lot of support and a lot of continued support from state or national organizations and I’m happy to have it, when it comes along, but you can’t count on it, because they have too many irons in the fire and yours isn’t necessarily their favorite all the time.
Who did you speak with?
I talked to Kathy Dahlkemper and I had worked on both of her campaigns as a volunteer. And being a volunteer is very different than being on the inside of the campaign. She was very honest with me about what it would mean for me and my husband.
What did she tell you about your family?
That I wouldn’t be around as much. I have grown children, so I don’t have children at home, so that’s more helpful to me, that’s probably a very good thng. I totally admire women and men who do this when their children are at home, because I saw my husband for an hour and a half yesterday and that’s a Sunday. It can get pretty hairy when I leave home early and don’t get back until late at night. He would not make that decision for me, but we discussed whether we would have a marriage in November, and we decided that we would. If you’re used to having a 50-50 marriage like we do, but when you’re doing this, it can be really difficult.
I totally understand why women particularly are deterred by this work.

Mike Kelly is a coward and a not so smart one at that. He was scheduled to debate Missa Eaton in Mercer County at an event sponsored by the League of Women Voters and has backed out and refuses to debate in any of the other counties that make up the 3rd District as well. His excuse is he'll be too busy campaigning. His sole concession is a taped forum in Erie with no audience participation, on a channel most of the district cannot view. I've been to several of his town hall meetings, which are few and far between, and they were pathetic. If he's asked a question he can't answer he refers you to his website or those of others. When asked what he's done for Mercer County he said if we think he's bringing pork to the county, that's not going to happen. When pressed to explain what he's doing for us in Washington, he said, "I'm representing you". Some representative! Missa Eaton is one smart, savvy lady with a real grasp of the issues. No wonder Mike's in hiding.

Thanks for the info about Missa, Ed. I sure hope Eaton wins.

She is right that Kelly is too partisan for our district. This is the guy who thought that August 1, when birth control started being covered by insurance by law, was just calamitous. Really, Mr. Kelly? You're against women's choice *and* birth control? So you want us back in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant? I would not vote for Kelly even if it meant our district had *no* representation. Because
Kelly surely does not have the best interests of his female constituents at heart.

Idiot Kelly And His Den Of Thieves UPDATED _ BREAKING!

Missa's Has A Good Shot At Winning  If I Read The Electorate Right
Missa Eaton for Congress
Friday, October 19,2012

Dear Friends,
It’s unbelievable, but I just read that a former member of Rep. Kelly’s office was arrested for voter fraud! CBS and NBC have reported that Colin Small of Phoenixville, Pa was arrested last night for throwing voter registration forms away in a dumpster; he now faces 13 felony and misdemeanor counts related to voter fraud. Small’s online LinkedIn resume states that he is employed by the Republican National Committee and previously worked for Kelly. Wow – talk about misguided priorities and lack of role models! I’m working for Missa because I know she has a true moral compass and believes in the democratic principles our country was founded on. Help our team send her to Washington by making a contribution today!

The current Republican Party does not have any good policy ideas to offer the American people right now. They do not want to come to the table and negotiate new policies that will benefit our country. Instead, they rely on worn-out and discredited ideas like tax breaks for the “job creators,” which is simply a reworked version of trickle-down economics that never reached the middle class. Knowing that they can’t convince voters with these poor policies, they are trying to cheat the election process by predetermining who can and cannot participate on Election Day. You can stand up for democracy and help us elect a leader who will protect everyone’s right to vote by making a contribution of any size to the campaign today!

Again and again, Kelly has remained silent instead of showing the courage and moral fortitude to stand up and speak out against the forces in his party who are steering this country in the wrong direction. He did not speak out against Turzai, jY REFUYust like he remained silent when local Republicans violated free speech and tore down a local Democratic group’s billboard. He was also silent when Rep. Todd Akin made his infamous remarks regarding rape. This pattern demonstrates Kelly’s lack of ethical leadership and unwillingness to use his office as a bully pulpit for democratic and just purposes. It is unfortunate that this behavior is now appearing in the younger generation of the Republican Party, as evidenced by last night’s arrest. Let YOUR voice be heard and tell your friends: support Missa for Congress!

Thank you,
Will Pierce
Field Director
Missa Eaton for Congress
IDIOT KELLY WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED AFTER FINDING OUT HOW MUCH POWER A CONGRESSMAN CAN WIELD.

ASSHOLE KELLY REFUSES TO DEBATE HIS OPPONENT SAVE 1X TOWARDS THE END OF THE MONTH AND IT WON'T BE DONE WITH A LIVE AUDIENCE, RATHER IN THE CONFINES OF PUBLIC TV STATION, WQLN.

WHEN KELLY RAN FOR THE FIRST TIME, HE PROMISED JOBS IN THE DISTRICT. HAS HE DELIVERED? NO WAY! THE JOBS ISSUE IS EVEN WORSE.

ANYONE WHO VOTES FOR KELLY IS OUT OF HIS MIND. THE CURRENT CONGRESS ENJOYED A 10% APPROVAL RATING! 10%!

MISSA JUST MIGHT PULL THIS OFF! VOTERS TODAY ARE NOW VERY HIP TO THE LIKES OF KELLY.

Idiot Kelly Looks To Coast To Victory - His Money Has Made Him Unstoppable

What An Idiot! From Used Car Salesman To Congress, Thanks To Idiot America!
Kelly has done nothing for Northwest Pennsylvania, read on...,

- Erie's electorate is now seeing firsthand how Congressional redistricting -- in this case gerrymandering by the Republican-controlled Legislature -- plays out in real time. It has enabled U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly to dodge debates throughout the 3rd District and basically stay hidden from any critical examination of his role in the do-nothing Congress, which has an approval rating of 10 percent.

No one doubts that Kelly is a huge favorite for re-election, but he serves no one, including himself, by being unwilling to attend more than one debate, WQLN's.

Kelly should also answer the Washington Post's story last week that disclosed how he and others have backed legislation that has benefited themselves and their families. According to the Post, Kelly and his wife made between $10.1 million and $50.2 million when Exxon Mobile bought two family-owned companies in 2011. "In a prepared statement, Kelly's chief of staff Matthew Stroia said the lawmaker has followed all rules and laws set by Congress regarding public disclosure of assets and conflict of interest," the Post wrote. Kelly should speak to this issue himself, in public, in person, in his own words.

With Re-Districting Complete, Kelly Assured Of Congressional Seat For Life! His Constituents - Old White People!

Super-Catholic Kelly, Right At Home With These Two Religious Kooks, Romney And Billy Graham
Kelly's voting record ripped

Recently, I received a political mailing from U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, of Butler, R-3rd Dist. It's titled "Fighting to Protect OUR Jobs."

How is voting to repeal Obamacare 66 times saving our jobs? How is lying about $716 billion being taken from Medicare saving our jobs? How is voting to give businesses standing to relocate to another state or even out of the country saving our jobs? How is voting to take away collective bargaining rights of postal workers saving our jobs?

How is he being a champion in efforts to save Social Security and Medicare? He and his tea party cohorts want to turn Medicare into a voucher program. How is lying and distorting the truth about Obama and the Democrats going to protect our jobs?

When he ran for Congress, Kelly said he would work to create jobs. So far, no jobs have been created and many public jobs have been lost mainly due to austerity measures that the tea party gang wants. Austerity doesn't work, just ask the Europeans.

Mr. Kelly has proved that his loyalties lie with his donors and the far right. He is inflexible and does not deserve to be re-elected. He is incapable of working with the other side to accomplish what's in the best interest of his constituents and the American people. Frankly, he is part of the problem we have in Washington today.
